The Best Return on Investment Available: Part 2 Your Secret Weapon: Community

In Part 1, we talked about why exercise is the best return on investment you can make in an hour a day. You get stronger, you have more energy, you move better, your stress drops and the benefits compound over time.

But here's something that doesn't get talked about enough:

The best training program in the world means nothing if you don't stick with it.

And the number one thing that keeps people consistent isn't motivation, willpower or the perfect workout plan.

It's community.

The Hidden Multiplier

Fitness already delivers an incredible return. Strength, energy, mobility, longevity — the list goes on. But community is the multiplier that makes all of it actually happen.

Because consistency is what drives every single one of those benefits. And consistency is a lot easier when you genuinely enjoy showing up.

When you know people expect to see you in class, skipping gets harder. Showing up becomes the default. And once you're there, the energy in the room takes over. You walk in tired after a long day, the workout starts, the coach is pushing the room and before you know it, you're doing more than you thought you would.

People naturally rise to the level of the environment around them.

That's not a small thing. That's is the magic of Community.

The CrossFit Open: Community on Full Display

Every year, the CrossFit Open gives us the clearest possible picture of what community does for performance.

For three weeks, athletes all over the world take on the same workouts. Some are chasing leaderboard spots. Others are just trying to get through the movements. But in in a great gym, the support looks exactly the same either way.

The music is up. The room is packed. Someone is counting your reps. The whole gym is invested in you finishing strong.

What might feel miserable alone suddenly becomes something you look forward to.

We see it every year: people sign up for workouts they weren't sure they could do, a whole group gathers around them, reps get counted and cheers get loud — and suddenly they're finishing something they weren't sure they could start.

That doesn't happen with headphones in, training alone.

It happens when people are invested in each other.

Our First Open at Chalk Dog

This year was special for Jo & I.

It was Chalk Dog CrossFit's first year open during the Open — and it warmed our hearts to see our community show up in a big way!

The workouts were challenging, the cheering was exuberant, the food was delicious, the personal records were many and the event recaps were animated!

To make things more fun, we ran an intramural competition between the morning crew, the A.M. Alphas, and the evening crew, the Silent Knights. Teams earned points not for scores, but for showing up to class, helping judge, cheering during Friday Night Lights and bringing their best dishes to the weekly potlucks.

The final points are still being tallied, and the winning team — and their custom banner — will be announced soon!

Hard Things Become Fun

The Open is a perfect annual reminder that hard things can actually be fun when you share them.

The workouts weren't easy. But the atmosphere changes everything. What could feel like a grind alone suddenly becomes something you look forward to all week.

That's a big reason people stay consistent for years instead of weeks.

And consistency is where the real return on your investment in fitness lives.

Working hard is better with people beside you.

If you've been thinking about trying CrossFit, this is your invitation. Come see what an hour inside a community like this can do — for your fitness, and for everything else.

Stay tuned for Part 3, where we dig into another reason your hour in the gym pays off far beyond the workout itself.
