BUT WHY THE GYMNASTICS!?
One thing that sets CrossFit apart from most other fitness methodologies is that we teach regular people gymnastics. Not former athletes. Not specialists. Regular humans. Moms, dads, grandparents, teenagers, teachers, nurses, fire fighters, college students. We bring them in and teach them things like handstand pushups and muscle ups.
And the obvious question is why.
Some members will never do a muscle up. Ever. So what is the point of giving them progressions for one?
Here is the secret. In CrossFit, the skill itself is rarely the real goal.
The skills are fun. They are flashy. They make you feel strong and capable and a little bit badass. But the skill is not actually what we are chasing. The pursuit of the skill is where the real value lives.
Take handstands. We love handstands here at Chalk Dog. Some members will never do a freestanding handstand, and that is completely fine. When we practice and pursue handstands, we build things that matter far more than being upside down without a wall.
We develop proprioception, your ability to know where your body is in space. We build shoulder strength and stability. Core strength and control. Confidence. The willingness to try something that might feel uncomfortable or even scary at first. These are the qualities that help you stay capable, resilient, and independent as you age. These are the things that carry over into everyday life.
The same idea applies to higher skill movements like muscle ups or handstand walks. When we break them down in class, we are not saying everyone needs to perform them at the highest level. We are using them as tools to build strength, coordination, body awareness, and problem solving. Learning how to move your own body through space is a powerful skill, no matter what variation you are working on.
That is why even members who are still chasing their very first pull-up should be excited when gymnastics shows up in the program. It means stronger shoulders, a stronger core, and better control of your own body.
Gymnastics in CrossFit is not about showing off. It is about building durable, capable humans who can move well and confidently for years to come. That is the point. And that is why we do it.
